SPAIN TRAVEL
Travel to Spain is easy, the accommodation there is plentiful, the climate
is nice, the people are relaxed, the beaches are long and sandy, the food
and drink are full of regional variety. More than 50 million foreigners a
year visit Spain, yet you can also travel for days and hear nothing but
Spanish.
The capital of Spain Madrid is cosmopolitan city, a business center,
headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament
and the home of the Spanish Royal Family. Madrid is characterized by intense
cultural and artistic activity and a very lively nightlife.
Being in Spain, certainly visit Barcelona, the second largest city in Spain
in both size and population. It is also the capital of Catalonia, an
Autonomous Community within Spain. Barcelona is really a collection of
multi-faceted and diverse cities. This modern city still preserves its
historic Gothic center almost intact, you will see the curious contrast
between the maze of narrow streets and the grid-like layout of the Eixample,
the urban planning "Enlargement" project of the end of the 19th century.
-Do not miss the chance to take part in the local festivals: Cavalcade of
the Magi in January - Their Majesties walk through crowded downtown streets,
acclaimed by the public without age limits; Autonomous Community Festivals
in May commemorating the uprising of the city of Madrid in 1808 against the
French with outstanding free musical concerts and other cultural activities;
Corpus Cristi festival is celebrated in June with parades of giants and
big- headed carnival figures. The fountain of the Cathedral's cloister is the
site of the traditional ou com balla (Dancing egg); September 24th is
the festival of La Mercè, patroness of Barcelona. This is a time of big
celebrations with four days of musical performances, parades of giants and
big-headed figures, fireworks, cultural and sport events, and open-air
dancing in various places in the city.
We recommend you to go to Alcalá de Henares, a World Heritage City with the
famous University founded in 1499 by Cardenal Cisneros; Aranjuez city with
its Palacio Real (the residence of Kings); El Escorial, construction built
by Felepe II with the monastery, church and palace melt in a framework of
courtyards, corridors and rooms; Metropolitan park of Collserola with
the Hermitage of Sant Medir and the Natural Reserve of Font Groga and many
others.
Eating out in Spain is often cheap and meals are substantial rather than
gourmet. One of the best ways to sample Spanish food is to try tapas, or
snacks, which are served at any time of day in local bars. Many of the
specialities of Spanish cuisine are based on seafood, although regional
specialities are easier to find inland than along the coast. Asturias has
its bean soup, fabada, cheeses and the best cider in Spain, and in Galicia
there are shellfish, especially good in casseroles, and a number of regional
seafood dishes such as hake à la Gallega. The Castile area specializes in
roast meats, mainly lamb, beef, veal and suckling pig, but there are also
stews, sausages, country ham and partridges. Spain is essentially a
wine-drinking country, with sherry being one of the principal export
products. Its English name is the anglicised version of the producing town
Jerez (pronounced kherez), from which the wine was first shipped to England.
